Description
Atregiti is a kaneka group originating from the La Roche tribe, on the island of Maré in New Caledonia. Created in the early 1990s, the group has developed over several generations of musicians.
After the group's early years, the founders' children gradually took up the mantle and continued developing its repertoire. This family and cultural transmission occupies a central place in Atregiti's identity, whose music is rooted in Marean Kaneka and Nengone culture.
As it evolved, the band narrowed down to eight musicians. Atregiti performs a politically engaged kaneka, characterized by melodic compositions, vocal harmonies, and lyrics written by several songwriters from the tribes of La Roche.
The group released their first album, Ha ome kore rane, in 2013 on Mangrove Productions. For this project, Atregiti benefited from the support of Honoré Bearune, a member of the group Yenu, who contributed to the vocal arrangements. The album includes ten songs, among them Atregiti, Ha ome kore rane, Methuma, Nhor me onet, Adramu ne eva, and Wa Melody.
In 2015, Atregiti released their second album, Tacaer, also produced by Mangrove Productions. The ten songs on this album were written and composed by various artists from the tribes of La Roche. This structure makes Atregiti more like an open musical collective rather than a group relying exclusively on a fixed lineup.
Through their albums and stage performances, Atregiti contributes to the transmission of kaneka music and the promotion of musical talent in Maré. The group notably performed on the Endemix Live program, broadcast on Nouvelle-Calédonie La 1ère in October 2020.
