Becim is a kaneka group from Koné, New Caledonia. The group was founded in the 1990s by singer and composer Valérie Célina Koneco, considered one of the pioneering female figures of kaneka.

Before creating Becim, Valérie Koneco gained her first musical experiences as a backing vocalist for Yata while living in the Montravel neighborhood of Nouméa. After settling in Koné, she reconnected with the Baco tribe, her mother's ancestral home, and founded Becim with musicians connected to the group Dacim, from the neighboring Oundjo tribe. Elders from Baco also entrusted her with texts in Haeke, the local language, for her to set to music.

Becim released their first album, Era ta bo, in 1995. Driven by the voice of Valérie Koneco and featuring songs primarily sung in the Kanak language, the album brought the group to prominence throughout New Caledonia. Becim thus became one of the first Kanak bands in the territory to feature a woman in the lead role.

In 1998, the group continued its journey with the album Sang mêlé. Its repertoire combines lyrics in Haeke, Nengone, and French. The album notably includes the songs Honneur aux anciens, Même racine, Confidence, Zizania, and Bonjour, bonne année, the latter of which benefited from a widely broadcast music video in New Caledonia.

Valérie Koneco is credited as the composer of several of the group's songs. Through her music, she addresses themes such as cultural transmission, youth, human relationships, and messages of love and peace.

After a long hiatus devoted in particular to her religious commitment, Valérie Koneco returned to the stage with Becim in the early 2020s. The group participated in the Kaneka au féminin event, then in the Kaneka Legend festival in 2022, surrounded by musicians from different generations.

Through its history, Becim has helped to open up the Kaneka music scene to female singers and musicians in New Caledonia. Valérie Koneco's voice and the group's two landmark albums hold a recognized place in New Caledonian musical heritage.
