Dick & Hnatr is a kaneka duo formed by singer-songwriters Dick Buama and Hnatr Buama, who are married both on and off stage. Dick Buama is from Mébuet on the island of Maré, while Hnatr Buama is from Nang on the island of Lifou in New Caledonia.

Their musical journey began with Guréjélé, a group founded in the early 1990s with several musicians from Maré. The band gained recognition in New Caledonia and the Pacific region thanks to a style of kaneka characterized by traditional guitar arpeggios, bamboo percussion, rhythms associated with the tchap drum, and vocal harmonies in the nengone language. Their first album, Wabeb Bulu, was released in 1993.

In the early 2000s, Dick and Hnatr developed their individual careers. Dick Buama released the album Orengo, and then Hnatr Buama recorded Le Temps qui passe. They continued to perform together, accompanied by new musicians. In 2002, they gave several concerts in New Caledonia, Tahiti, Fiji, and Vanuatu, before participating in the Coke Music Choc festival in Nouméa.

The couple then adopted the stage name Dick & Hnatr and released Eau claire in 2005. Their songs, performed in Nengone, Drehu, or French, address Kanak traditions and culture, societal transformations, family relationships, and various aspects of daily life. Their music combines socially conscious lyrics with danceable melodies and vocal harmonies characteristic of the Loyalty Islands.

In 2008, Dick & Hnatr embarked on their first tour of France. Their performance at the New Morning in Paris resulted in the CD and DVD "Live au New Morning". In 2010, the duo performed at the Festival au Désert in Mali. The music video for the song "Lanesera", performed by Hnatr, was filmed during this trip.

For the album Angaishola, Dick & Hnatr collaborated with musician and arranger Camel Zekri. Conceived between Nouméa and Normandy, this project particularly highlights vocals, guitars, and the ukulele. This collaboration continues on Deko Pareu Ri Ci Ran, recorded with the participation of two of the couple's children.

Family legacy takes on even greater significance with Ekonejeu, an album recorded with the "Buama Family." The title means "alliance" and symbolizes the continuity of the musical project between Dick, Hnatr, and their children. The album was released on music platforms in 2019.

In 2024, a concert is being organized to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Guréjélé's first album. Dick & Hnatr's journey thus spans several decades of creation, international tours, and the transmission of kaneka music between generations.
