Hmej, identified in the credits of his songs as Albert Wenehoua, was a singer-songwriter from the Hapetra tribe on the island of Lifou in New Caledonia. His musical style combined reggae, zouk, ska and world music.

His first recorded album, Taboo, was released in 2008 by Mangrove Productions. Apple Music lists this album under the name Hmej and associates it with the year 2008.

In a presentation dedicated to the release of Taboo, Mangrove Productions describes an album addressing several themes, including the environment, love, family, and sexuality. Hmej explains that the title refers to subjects considered taboo in society, as well as those that are not taboo but, in his opinion, should be more so.

The tracks listed on Taboo include On y go, Mister Ciao, Zore na hnim, Shine the Sex, Zoukeniju, Mythomane, Tjibaoué, Emilia, and Destination. Mangrove attributes these songs to Hmej Wenehoua, either alone or with other writers and composers, depending on the track.

Geneviève Tauhiro features on the track "On y go," while Jeanne Hue is a guest on "Zore na hnim." The song "Zoukeniju" credits Georgia Roussel, Hmej Wenehoua, and David Le Roy.

Hmej then released Cordes sensibles on October 24, 2012. The album contains eleven songs and lasts approximately 43 minutes. This information is consistent across Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, and Mangrove Productions.

The eleven titles of Cordes sensibles are Madame, L'école est serrée, Grandysco, I Get Shine, Ne me kiffe pas, Sayaya, Libérée, Celejë Kanaky, Sauvez-la, Effet rétro and Larme de fond.

Albert Wenehoua is credited as author or composer on all tracks of Cordes sensibles. David Le Roy contributed to the composition of the majority of the tracks and was responsible for the programming and arrangements of the album.

Georgia Roussel is credited on Madame, Sauvez-la, Effet rétro and Larme de fond. Emrand Henry features on I Get Shine, Derek Metivier on Ne me kiffe pas, and Airo and Vesty are guests on Sauvez-la.

The recording and mixing of Cordes sensibles were done by Derek Metivier at Studio Mangrove in Nouméa. Mastering was done by Don Bartley at Benchmark Mastering Studio in Sydney.

Besides music, Hmej also worked as a teacher, notably with students with disabilities. This professional activity is mentioned by Radio Rythme Bleu in its article about his passing.

Hmej passed away in Lifou in July 2021. The New Caledonian media then recalled his activity as a singer, composer and performer.
